Gear up for India's new data protection law

The Government of India officially notified the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, 2025, on November 13, 2025, thereby marking the full operationalization of the DPDP Act, 2023. This notification follows the earlier release of the draft rules on January 3, 2025, which were open for public consultation and stakeholder feedback. The final version of the rules was shaped by extensive consultation and public input before being formally enacted.​

Set out below is a brief timeline of landmark developments which led to the formulation of a draft of data privacy framework and an indication of what lays ahead.
