BTG Legal and Advaya Legal combine to create more depth and scale.

BTG Legal and Advaya Legal are delighted to announce that they are combining from 21 September 2023 to form ‘BTG Advaya”.

BTG Advaya will now be made up of 11 partners in 3 offices – Mumbai, Bengaluru, and New Delhi – adding scale, depth and reach in the combined firm’s ability to better service its clients. Consistent with the ethos of strategic, partner-led advice, the firm will maintain a partner to associate ratio of 1:4.

The erstwhile firms, BTG Legal and Advaya Legal, had over the years built a strong reputation as specialist cross border firms with longstanding client relationships and consistent growth in profitability. Sector expertise combined with the style of delivery – business-oriented, simple, and direct, set a benchmark in the market with repeat clients generating most of the revenues. In addition, the firms shared core values of integrity, excellence, and collaboration in a modern, unfussy, and flat workplace.

The combination is therefore the logical next step to build on those shared values and reputation to be able to better access talent and better service clients.

BTG Legal was founded by Prashant Mara in 2014 after his stint as a partner with international law firm, Osborne Clarke in their London, and Cologne offices. Prashant was previously with a French law firm in Paris, a national Indian firm and started his career as in-house counsel with Infosys.

Advaya Legal was founded in 2010 by Ramesh Vaidyanathan after having served as the General Counsel of several portfolio businesses of Indian infrastructure major, GVK. Prior to that, Ramesh was a partner with a large Indian law firm, where he set up the firm’s Mumbai office and spearheaded it for six years as its Resident Partner.

Ramesh Vaidyanathan, Managing Partner of Advaya Legal, shared his excitement and said, "For me, this combination will enhance our ability to provide top-tier legal services and reinforce our reputation for integrity and client-focused practices.  BTG is highly regarded by clients for its quality standards, commerciality, and ethics. I knew Prashant as an excellent lawyer for several years before our professional relationship grew into a deep and lasting friendship. We initially crossed paths during his stint with reputed overseas law firms and ended up collaborating on many legal assignments. This relationship continued at a personal level even as Prashant returned to India to set up and grow BTG Legal, with the help of his amazing team of partners, into the formidable law firm that it is today. I am excited about the combination and the immense opportunities that it presents to our clients, lawyers, and other stakeholders.”

Prashant Mara, Managing Partner of BTG Legal, added, “The combination will diversify our client base, add new partners and more than anything, enable me to work closely with Ramesh who is a brilliant and well-known lawyer and has been a dear friend for more than 15 years. While most mergers or combinations end up being about numbers, our firm belief is that we are professionals coming together and not just businesses merging – therefore the bottom line is that the quality of legal advice we provide must be top notch – which I am confident we will score on, as Ramesh and his team are some of the best lawyers I know.”
