Sandhya Surendran    





Sandhya is a media and technology lawyer, specialising in commercial transactions, intellectual property and licensing.

Sandhya specialises in intellectual property rights, especially in relation to content, and has represented clients on both sides of talent and production. Her clients include entities operating in AI and blockchain, media production, music distribution, independent record labels, advertising-tech, health-tech, IT/ITES, e-commerce and telecom services.

She has a special interest in and has advised on a range of matters including ethics and licensing in artificial intelligence, licensing strategies in connection with machine learning in generative AI platforms and content creation on blockchain, specifically in the context of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and risk mitigation in content publishing.

She has been featured in publications and conferences, both in India and overseas, as an expert on the Indian music industry and on topics related to intellectual property rights in media & entertainment and emerging technologies like AI, NFTs and their impact on the creative sector. Her unique expertise in both content and tech is highly sought after, advising on legal and strategic matters that impact business.
In her effort to build more awareness and drive change in the creative sector, Sandhya regularly conducts and participates in workshops that train stakeholders in rights management and copyright & licensing issues. This also led to her podcast, Lex Talk Music, which is one of India’s first podcasts dedicated to the business of the Indian music industry.

Prior to joining BTG, Sandhya ran her independent practice Lexic, and has also worked with Vice Media, InMobi, Infosys and (erstwhile) Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co. She graduated from the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), University of Law, Hyderabad in 2007.
